What counts as a good engagement rate?
Benchmarks vary by platform and audience size. As a rough guide, a healthy account usually sits in these ranges:
| Platform | Low | Healthy | Excellent |
|---|---|---|---|
| below 1% | 1% – 2.5% | above 2.5% | |
| TikTok | below 4% | 4% – 9% | above 9% |
| YouTube | below 1% | 1% – 3% | above 3% |
| X (Twitter) | below 0.5% | 0.5% – 1.5% | above 1.5% |
| below 0.5% | 0.5% – 1.5% | above 1.5% | |
| below 2% | 2% – 5% | above 5% |
Benchmarks are typical industry ranges and are meant as orientation, not a guarantee. Smaller accounts often show higher percentages than large ones.

Frequently asked questions
How is engagement rate calculated?
Engagement rate is the share of your audience that interacts with a post. The common formula is (likes + comments + shares) divided by your follower count, multiplied by 100. Some analysts also include saves and profile visits.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
For Instagram, roughly 1% to 2.5% is a healthy range for most accounts, and above 2.5% is excellent. Very small accounts can run higher. Reach matters more than the raw percentage once you are buying growth.
Is a high follower count enough?
No. Followers are a potential audience, not proof of attention. A smaller account with a 4% engagement rate is often more valuable to advertisers and algorithms than a large account stuck at 0.3%.
How do I calculate the ROI of SMM?
ROI equals (attributed revenue minus spend) divided by spend, times 100. ROAS is the simpler ratio: attributed revenue divided by spend. Track a unique link or code per campaign so the revenue you attribute is actually caused by the spend.
